Why Innerwear is the New Outerwear

When Madonna wore a provocative Jean Paul Gaultier lingerie (featuring the oh-so-pointy bullet bra) on her 1990 Blond Ambition tour, wearing innerwear as outerwear was outrageous. These days it's part of the streetwear zeitgeist. As blogger Leandra Medine wrote in Man Repeller, “lingerie is so in, it’s out!”

Options for wearing innerwear as outerwear are limitless: wearing a camisole by itself with high-waisted jeans (or over a tee shirt or sweater if you’re a true fashionista); sporting a babydoll dress on its own with heels in the evening or with a tee shirt and sneakers for casual daywear. A beautiful bodysuit worn on its own under a blazer or with jeans will forever remain a fashion staple, as will a semi-sheer blouse worn over a gorgeous bra.

For a look at what's hot on the streets check out a few recent sightings below. And for more on the deep history of this sexy trend - because news flash: there's a super interesting story behind innerwear as outerwear that might surprise you -  watch French fashion curator Catherine Ormen riff on The Big Reveal in the video below.
